John became involved in soil microbiology when yard waste was banned from landfills in the 1980’s. After developing several programs designed to recycle organics found in the waste stream -turning them into stable, nutrient rich growth media, John founded J.R. Huyge Associates, LLC to further the goal of recycling efficiently and effectively.

Volatile organics make up a large fraction of the general waste stream. Waste water sludge, food waste, yard waste, industrial and commercial wastes have long been land filled, sent down the sewer system or burned, wasting energy and nutrients.

Projects

JRH, consulting with Environmental Cost Management, Inc., conducted a pilot project demonstrating the ability of static pile composting to destroy coliform and other disease causing bacteria.

Working with Evergreen Recycling, JRH remediated fuel and oil contaminated soil by including the toxic material as a feedstock in a compost program with waste water sludge and yard waste.

In both cases the finished compost was declared inert by the EPA.

In the late 1990’s JRH began to develop liquid products used to adjust the biological makeup of the soil. Biostimulants are liquids produced using pasteurized compost as the source of the original microbial population. Incubated and managed to maximize growth, MBST biostimulants have been successfully used to enhance plant growth and disease resistance, in addition these products are used in bioremediation of heavy metals and PCB’s.

JRH offers over 25 years of experience in material handling, management and processing. JRH has developed plans and programs used to manage volatile organics, remediate contaminants and reduce the volume of materials being land filled.

• Kalamazoo River application of accelerated bioleeching as a method of cleaning the dredging spoils from the Kalamazoo lake and having them declared inert.
